The Joy of Cosiness and Companionship

Well, I could never have imagined ending up in such a cosy cottage with such a stupendous companion. Cosiness is different to comfort, comfort can limit us, but cosiness can provide a base from which we can launch out into the depths. That is why I am so happy to have found cosiness and a trusted companion; these things provide the security I need to set out on my many wonderful adventures!

Sometimes I can get lonely, but I realise I am never truly alone

Sometimes I can get lonely, but I realise I am never truly alone – “Never less alone than when alone” as some of my favourite saint friends such as St Bernard of Clairvaux and St John Henry Newman used to say. I have often reflected on this quote. I find that what makes the bread really special is that when I bake, I try to infuse it with wisdom from the saints, so that it is not only the yeast that helps it rise…

On what is important.

Essentially, there is only one thing that really matters in life, that is truly important and yet one can be distracted by so many other things. Yet, it is a curious paradox because those other things, when used well can be conduits to help us get to what really matters. Beauty is one of those things.

I love baking bread.

I love baking bread. It has been my passion for all my life. What I like most is the beautiful smell of baking bread that suddenly and almost unexpectedly breaks into the cottage to fill every nook and cranny with its wholesome aroma.

It is hard to describe a smell, no matter how well it is described, every person will experience it slightly differently and be unable to fully explain what they are smelling, the depths, the flavours, the notes, the memories to anybody else.

Smells are for me the most evocative of things. A smell can parachute you into another dimension, another universe – you can travel millions of miles without leaving your abode. What a gift!
